Fein – design and sustainability
The synergy of graphic design and sustainable packaging solutions
As a major German specialist for power tools, Fein offers the MultiMaster, among other things. A multi-tool with a myriad of applications in the professional and DIY sector. This multi-tool comes with an accessory range of over 150 products.
Some of these products are also available from retail partners under a second brand. These were to be converted from blister packs to fibre-based packaging. As a design agency partner, Pacoon was commissioned to conceptualise the project and lead the project management with all relevant departments at Fein.
To this end, a kick-off meeting was held to record the requirements of the individual departments, the packaging situation in a workshop for the disabled with the given restrictions, logistics and packaging ordering as well as coordination with the existing suppliers of cardboard packaging. Initial concepts took into account the different approaches to fibre-based packaging, which were then evaluated internally by the customer and checked for initial rough cost calculations and feasibility. Another important aspect was the consolidation of many different packaging sizes in order to realise synergy effects across the entire value chain. This also led to an initial streamlining of the product range and questioning of the initially desired target parameters in order to limit the variances.
Once the favoured concept approach had been selected, the packaging prototypes were developed in consultation with the suppliers, inlays for fixing and securing the accessories were developed by pacoon and the drop tests were carried out by Fein. Finally, the final packaging was designed by the pacoon designers and offered to the retail partners.
